pulling head on my "new" 95 E300

I recently purchased a 1995 E300 that I am installing a new head gasket on. I should have the head off sometime this week. I have attached a pic showing what I feel is evidence of pump cavitation. The previous owner had been running the green coolant. Not sure how much the green coolant contributed to these holes because it was leaking bad enough that he was constantly having to add it.

Hopefully the head is not damaged. I will know sometime this week.

You should then see significant damage to the impeller.

That is a point. Must be the effects of the green coolant versus cavitation then. The impeller on the wp looks fine but I am putting a new one on it since I have it torn down.

Engatwork, uh, dont strip a head bolt by not clearing the residual oil out of the hex and then horsing the tar out of it. That was a bummer! Good luck! The only issue I had was the upper timing rail pin. Now, the engine has an "outtie" as it wouldn't seat all the way.

Thanks for the heads up. I typically use a shop vac to pull the oil out of the heads. Everything has been progressing nicely. Based on what I can tell the previous owner was honest in regards to his oil chang frequency. The slide rails look great with a minimum amount of wear.

I hope you are snapping a battery of pics of this whole process Jim. While I certainly hope to never be that far into mine, some day it still might be very handy info to see.
So you really think that could be caused just by green coolant???

I am getting alot of good pictures. Pretty straight forward job so far. A couple "special" tools I've had to pick up was a 17mm allen (belt tensioner mechanism) and a 9 mm 12 point socket to remove the cams.

I can't say for sure what caused the issue in the water pump housing but I am a firm believer in the Zerox G06 coolant.

I've seen G05, but what is G06?
