83 300 SD exhaust question???

I was wanting to know is,

What is the double split muffler (AKA the butterfly) for??? Is it for sound damping or back pressure which make no since to me as the turbo would do that.

Also what kind of presure does the turbo make and does it have a top out limit???

Thanks Doc.

You're referring to the resonators and they are designed to eliminate specific resonances at about 2000 rpm. Many of us have simply removed them with no significant increase in noise level.

The turbo makes 12 psi when it's properly setup. The turbo itself is quite capable of producing 25 psi or more...........and the engine will promptly blow a head gasket if it did.

I know of a few people that have run 25 psi without blowing headgaskets...the 617 is not that whimpy.

There is really no need for that kind of boost pressure though...
