They didn't make the 300SDL in 1998.

Why do you believe you need a complete new engine?

Most of these typically need a head............??

Metric Motors. You may want to see what you actualy need...might be able to get away with a short block.

Milage 120k # 3 Rod let go. Damaged block. Car is in great shape. Seems like the only way to go.

That's really unfortunate. But the engine is north of $8K for a long block.

I'd probably take the gamble with a salvaged engine with a refreshed head.

Find the best, nicest, lowest mileage, used 300SDL on ebay, or otherwise offered for sale. Fly out to where it's located, bring a senior mechanic from the local Mercedes dealer with you, have him check it out for you, to you satisfaction, fly back and sit at the computer and start bidding and you should still end up thousands of dollars ahead. The past two weeks I've seen two nice ones, real nice an 89,000 mile one in Kansas final sale price i believe $5,500 and one in California with $20,000 in repair records that i think the high bid was $4,500.

X2.

And, you have the existing vehicle as a very valuable source of parts.

Thank you for your input. The problem I have with a used car is that I could encounter the same problem again. That is why I have been thinking about a rebuild.

It is true, the engine will cost more than the car is worth, purchasing one from metric Motors.
They do top quality work, and have a good guaranty.

I purchased one from them 1 1/2 yrs ago for the 85 300D, cost me $6,000.00 out the door for a long block. Cost has gone up a bit from then.

Having someone doing the work in a shop will increase the cost. If you are not in a hurry to get back on the road and can DIY it will cost less except for your own sweat ecquity. also you can do the little things the grease monkeys in a shop won`t do.

Iam sure one for the SDL will be a bit more.

Thoughts on mine is if it gets totaled, the engine is going into something else and not the junk yard. the body is only worth what ever the insurance will give, and not much. to me it worth much more, and besides the interior and mechanics are in good shape.
Buying a used car would just be a new set of problems all over again.

Charlie
