Id this and I assume it should be connected

So just starting to get under the hood on our new ride. Steal learning tons so bear with me.

What is this?
I would guess an oxygen sensor.
I would expect it should be connected?

The hose that should be connected is just plugged with a screw.

It's the EGR tube. It robs power to reduce emissions. Hence the plugging.

It's the EGR valve. Plugging the hose is the correct solution to eliminate EGR from the engine.

Do a search on "EGR" and plan to spend some time learning about it.

You can shove a BB into the rubber line and then re-connect it so it at least "looks" like it's functioning...

He has an ARV, whatever you make sure you don't change the functionality of the ARV.

I put a pair of hose clamps on my breather tube, there even seems to be a nice ring around the elbows just for a hose clamp....lol, after tightening them up, no more icky valve cover. Nice and clean now. +1 on the egr and 3/2 bypass. I have done this and it solved my vacuum problems, and even made it seem to run better.

Check that plastic elbow. It will often crack along the seam if clamped too tight.

I couldn't even touch anything under the hood before at least wiping it off.

Well, here is mine - '81 300SD - and it is still connected as you can see. I have read the threads about not needing the EGR valve and taking everything off the valve cover - but I just cannot make myself do it. Everything is still stock.

I am puzzled. What did MB not know, or what did it later learn, when it designed and installed all this EGR valve stuff and the tubing that goes from place to place?

EGR = Stupid Amerikaner Crap to Clog Intake

U.S.Congress (Now there's the largest group of un-indicted co-conspirators
on the Planet) mandated through the CFR and EPA enforces all the EGR Crap.
