Potential Tranny Swap 240D

Hey people. I looked through the archives for this, couldn't exactly deduce the answer. I have a 1983 240D with automatic here in Hawaii. I got a line on a manual 240D (rust bucket/not running) As a donor car that is not a problem, but what I would like to know is are all 123 240D's compatible with each other. Also, since I can't test drive the donor, what is best way to survey transmission? My car is great (body excellent w/118K miles) but I can't help thinking that the manual trans is a better match for this vehicle. Thanks

Everything should swap over easily.

If it doesn't run - could there potentially be a tranny problem? Maybe not or probably not but who knows. But according to this site everything should bolt right up.

There is a very low probability that the donor car was canned due to a problem with the manual transmission itself. They are very robust. There is some chance that the clutch or hydraulics might not be great on the donor, but you would be able to examine an fix those issues when you swap.

Mahalo plenty (many thanks)

Evidently the car just hasn't been driven or started for several years (I haven't seen it myself, don't think it was a trans problem). Thanks for the inputs- Rick, see you have a diesel Rabbit, I had an '80 2-door it was great (42/55) with clouds of smoke, got scammed by the dealer on undercoating so Hawaii's salty air killed it... Think I'll check this donor car out and mobilize by good buddy to help ... thanks again to all

If you have a chance and you can get away with it (emission testing in HI?), swap the intake/exhaust manifolds with yours (I assume the donor is a pre-82?).

You will probably pickup more power without that egr crapola manifold with the butterfly(get the support strut for the manifold too-its different)
