W210 alignment suspension issue

After getting new tires, my car is now pulling to the right pretty bad. Also I have noticed for a while if I take a sharp left turn at a quick speed, I feel a slight vibration and a sound that sounds like something is rubbing a little bit or "bottoming out" slightly. Are these two issues related? Is realigning a mercedes much different and other cars? Thanks.

W210, hmmmm, sounds like a spring perch issue under development. Jim

Are the tires the correct size? Are the lug nuts all tight?? Is the tire pressure correct, I would check those three things first, it also might be a bad wheel bearing.. The alignment for MB is a bit different, requiring special tools and cam bolts (if needed). You might want to find a an indy shop or take to a dealer for the alignment.

I had not considered wheel bearings. I actually ruined the front wheel bearings on my car at the 90,000 mile mark or so. Never had that happen before, but the event was noteworthy. I was cruising on the highway at ~75 mph and the wheel jerked a bit and the car started tracking with uneven pavement features. Got home, jacked the driver's side of the car up and went to check the suspension and I could move the wheel around a bunch. Not like it was going to fall off, but it moved and clunked a bit.

Had the bearings replaced (and a bunch of other worn stuff in the front end) and asked if this was "normal" for W210's, noting that this was the first time in more than a million miles on MB's that I have ever had a wheel bearing just quit on me. No response.

I have had the rear wheel bearings fail on our W124 300E, which is a huge pain the hiney to fix, since the W210 front wheel bearing experience. The W124 failure was just noise, no steering issues, as they were rear wheels and there was no wobbling. I actually had to jack the car up and let the engine run the lifted wheel to pinpoint where the noise was coming from as I couldn't distinguish it from inside the car and there was no play in the wheel locating function by the bearing.

Jim

tires are correct size, lugnuts torqued to specs, 28psi in the front, 34psi in the rear. I guess i will end up taking it to the shop. Does anyone know what a typical ballpark figure would be for an alignment job at a dealership?

I would be interested to hear more about wheel bearings. Mine is making vibration sounds but only on certain pavements. So I'm thinking tires.

Here's a whole different angle on it: Have you ever replaced the engine mounts? My car would produce a quick vibration that was transmitted to the body of the car when making sharper left hand turns and on sections of the road that had a little "dip" to them.

After I replaced the mounts, everything is good there. Now, the tires are just cupped from bad shocks and I need a four wheel alignment. It just never ends...

i'm glad you mentioned the engine mounts. The vibration i'm hearing/feeling is quick, only a second or two. The engine mounts have never been replaced and I did wonder about them but honestly I have never even looked at the engine mounts on my car. Did you replace them yourself, or pay to have it done? Was it a difficult/expensive fix?

If the mounts are original, they may not be your problem, but they surely need to be replaced. I did mine myself and it isn't too bad of a job. Do a search and pictures and part numbers will come up.

I did my own. They weren't too hard, maybe an hour on each side. I got mine on ebay for about $120 for both - OEM parts.

BTW, where were you guys last year for our Outer Banks GTG?

Good call on engine mounts. Use OE quality only, liquid-filled. Be sure to install rubber boot on left side, do not forget heat shield on right. do one at a time, lift engine slightly to relieve weight off mounts.

I did the transmission mount and the shifter bushing(s) at the same time. Good luck. YMMV

I guess I am confused since the OP said this began after getting new tires. Did the problem surface right after you got the tires? If so you might have gotten a bad tire - it does happen.

If, on the other hand, it drove OK for a while and then started having a problem it could have nothing to do with the tires and purely be coincidence.

As for the alignment question - I would have the dealership do it. They generally charge $100-$150 for an alignment and sometimes it is more if they need to replace the camber bolts. Even if not the cause it is generally a good idea to have an alignment done with new tires because mis-alignment is a major cause of premature tire wear.
