4th gear dragging?

I finally had a chance to drive the newer 83 300D (UPS) up to speed. When it hit 4th, it felt as if someone stepped on the brakes. It made it up to 65, but the whole time it felt like something was holding it back. 1-3 the car accelerates fine, it's just that last gear. I'll drive it again today to check to see if it's doing it when cruising or just in go mode. Any thoughts?

2nd and 3rd work fine. tach works, but I don't remember what it was reading or how fast I was going. I'll get an answer when I pick it up from being state inspected. How fun is that?

Perhaps a silly question, but did you change the fuel filters? When my CD's filters were first clogging up, I only noticed the poor performance on the highway. Of course, as they got more clogged, around town driving became an adventure.

Update. First, I haven't done anything to the car except fix the bodywork and the necessary stuff for inspection. Mistergood, I actually thought of fuel filters on the way home, while I was creeping at a whopping 20 mph. Now that the body is done, it's time to concentrate on mechanicals. It has digressed from only doing it in 4th, to 3rd and 4th, and now it does it in 2, 3, and 4. First gear still screams like crazy. Once it shifts, all bets are off. Now if it weren't so cold out...

Sheesh,, talk about feeling like a newbie. I changed fuel filters today, and it's back to normal. Should have done them when I first brought it home. I snuck out to replace them, while I'm waiting for stain to dry. The garage is a woodshop for the week.
