http://springfield.craigslist.org/cto/1043231659.html
45 to 50 MPG in a 240d ......AND he's willing to 'nigotiate' on this miracle mercadez. I wonder what a mercadez looks like. Someone should ask him how he gets such mileage so we could all benefit.

Someone should reply to his ad, and inform him that these mpg numbers are impossible for a 240D. I wish I was in his area, I would offer to buy it at full price, IF, and only If, I could drive it for one week, and observe the mpg to be true. If the mpg reach his stated amount, I would hand over the cash.... I bet he would decline immediately.

Or he just uses a modified epa formula to establish expected milage. For example a car we aquired last week is epa rated for about 50 miles per imperial gallon. We know without checking the car will deliver lower forties per imperial gallon driven very cautiously on the highway. That will be about the maximum. .
I have always wondered why a better formula has never been implemented as the original ideal was to generate comparison values. Should never have degenerated into pie in the sky. I just have to guess it was an attempt at dramatics as the current formula does indicate a wider spread than might occur with honesty. Intent of the originator of the add also might be to attract newbees to the 240 label in excess cases like the one mentioned. Generally with some experience with the 240 diesels more knowledgeable purchasers write those type of adds off. Could also be used as a screening tool for example to move junk without getting knowledgeble people consuming your time. To say there are a lack of reasonable ethics by car sellers in general is a vast understatment. I really get some satisfaction when deciet by the vendor is established. I then seem to have a compulsion to dance them through the hoops. The resultant entertainment is almost worth paying for. Last edited by barry123400; 02-21-2009 at 10:25 AM. |
