Panel removal necessary for tinting an '86 SDL?
With sunnier days fast approaching here in Texas, I have been looking around for an answer to this question but haven't found it yet.
Is removal of the door panels (to protect the electronics from water) necessary or recommended when tinting the windows in a 1986 300SDL? I have only had the car a little while and have never had a door panel off to see where and what protection the electronics would have from water that the installers use (and which may seep down into panel during installation). One tint shop I talked to a while ago mentioned that they recommended taking them off on Mercedes (but the guys didn't seem sure about what models this was recommended for). So has anybody had this done and left the panels on? Were there any problems afterwards? If I know that one panel has been off for window maintenance, would that make a difference? A secondary question would be if anybody has any recommendations for tint shops in the DFW area? |

The electrical stuff you are worried about are on the inside of the door frame up against and attached to the switches located on the door panel, where as the window is in the middle of the door frame and any moisture from tinting would just run down the window and drip inside eventually running out of the drain holes. You would have to pour several gallons of water into the frame to even begin to worry about that.

I've never had to or had door panels removed on any car for tint work.

There should be a moisture barrier between the door frame that contains the window mechanism and the interior panel that contains the electric but not electronic switches. The window motor might get wet but pulling the interior panel won't prevent that. If you're paranoid, remove the puddle light.

When I had mine tinted, I removed all door interiors, mainly due to their shape and protrusion into the window area. With the panels removed there is less chance for error when installing the tint, and the tint will cover more of the window.
