OM602 Turbo Shutoff Valve Replacement now stop lever stuck down

Hey Guys,

I helped a buddy of mine replace the Vacuum shutoff solenoid on his 1991 300D 2.5 turbo. The car was not shutting off on its own and we tested the 'bad' one and verified that it wasn't holding vacuum.

Replaced it with a new one (plastic, had to get an special elbow too), tested it, held good vacuum.

Put the new one in, per pdraytons excellent write up, put everything back, make sure the shutoff valve rod into the stop lever slot, new O-Ring and snug down.

Crank it up, runs without 'running away', shuts off, stop lever comes down, wait a few minutes, turn key, stop lever doesnt come back up, if you give it a little help, it comes back, but once its turned off, it sucks back down again, and needs help every time to pull the stop lever up so you can start it again.

I'm at a loss of what to do.

Anyone?

Thanks in advance!

This fellow is in the same boat and has a nifty workaround -

If this is the start of a trend, my guess is replacement actuators have more stroke than OE and cause the mechanism to bind internally. Does anyone have OE and replacement actuators available to compare?

Is the actuator rod free to rotate independently of the actuator housing? If not, maybe you installed the new one with the rod at an angle.

Any chance it's installed 180° away from the correct orientation? I've never, ever had this problem before, and I've changed several 60x shutoff pods. Bizarre...

No, but there is a certain amount of rotation of the whole solenoid on the 2 bolts that mount it to the IP. I may loosen it and play around with it a little.

I'll say. Two different members with the identical problem........something is amiss.

I may have to see how they did that nifty fix for now.

UPDATE:

The issue seems to have corrected itself and the car starts without having to open the hood and pull the stop lever up etc.
