What is this part?

Does anyone know what this is or where it goes?

It was bundled up over on the drivers side fender well. It looks like it broke off of something?

Looks like the inductive sensor that counts crank pulley rotations. It attaches to a bracket around the 2 o'clock position relative the crank pulley.

Ya.
On earlier models that was necessary for the tach to work.

And isn't that the tach amp it's connected to? I'm thinking this guys tach hasn't been working for a while...

I think the 85s had a flywheel sensor for the tach and kept the tach amp connector as the diagnostic port.

All the gauges work, including the tach.

So, is it ok to leave this unhooked or does it have some other function?

it looks like a heavy handed mechanic pulled it off at one point and just tied it off as it does nothing. NOBODY, even the MB techs don't use it! it's a connection that never got used except for MAYBE at the factory... or in the service bay in the '85 year... leave it as it is.

On 84's and 85's there is no tach amp there, note the short cap instead of an amp.
I have not seen that either, disconnected, but there doesn't seem to be a problem. You can leave it as is.

Diagnostic port on an 85? I did not know there was such things back then.

When I first saw it, the first thing I thought was some type of crank position sensor.

As long as it is not critical. I will leave it as is.

Thanks again for all the help!

It`s about the 11:00 position on the trans. adaptor plate, should be a black cable attached to it.

Thats odd that the crank sensor would be present like that. I wonder if someone added it at some point?

not odd at all. all the 84's and 85's have the sensor and the cap there, it was left in because techs needed a non computerized way to determine engine RPM during service... well, that was the theory anyway... nobody uses it.

The 85's got a little "weird" since they were the last year. Different vacuum routing, an EGR computer that drives the tach, some different wiring, and different rear diff ratio.
