Are you running synthetic or regular ATF? I've had problems with regular fluid letting the tranny flare as the engine warms up, switched to synthetic and it hasn't done it since ..much

Whats flaring? None of ours flare anymore now that they are all running synthetic. Thats 5 MB's of various years and models, all proving how good synthetic is in the trans.

If the rpms are rising while its already in 4th when you accelerate....thats not a good sign. Could be dead 4th gear clutch....

Did it only happen the one time, or is it repeatable?

I'd wait to see if it does it again before getting too concerned. Certainly check the fluid level, and smell it to see if smells burnt. If the trans fluid hasn't been changed in a while, this may be a good signal to do so. I'd use a synthetic, there are some recent threads debating which to use. I don't know about your particular model, but my '87 190D has some temperature switches that change the way vacuum works on the modulator as the car warms up. Could have been something like a glitch in one of the switches and valves, a piece of dirt in a line, etc.
