how do i install a tachometer in my 190d?

Does anyone know how i would go about installing a tachometer in my 190d? I got one from a 190e of the same vintage,('84) and i'm wondering if it's compatible, and how i would connect it if so. In my previous car, a '88 Volvo, there was a wire already in place that i was able to connect it to.
Thanks!

Most gas engine tachs will give you an rpm reading based on an input from the distributor, or other ignition electrical connection. These old diesels cannot supply this needed input because they are not electrically ignited, diesels are a compression ignition engine. I dont think the 190E tach will be compatible with the 190D. I have had a few diesels in my life and any of them that had a tach, got their reading from the alternator. Sounds wierd huh? But yeah, on a diesel, you either have to use the alternator, or some sort of transducer that connects to the IP, or cam gear teeth. Hope this helps.

The 190D tach takes a signal directly from a sensor behind and below the oil filter. If you have such a sensor, I imagine the tach off a later year 190D will work regardless of whether it's off a 2.2 or 2.5. I don't know if EZL sends the tach 1 ground pulse per crank revolution like the Diesel flywheel sensor. If not, the gasser tach will read two or four times as high as the crank's turning.
