W124 300D Defective Rebuilt Alternator?

Hi guys and girls,

Recently replaced my alternator on my 90 300D with a rebuild. Everything is working fine, except I notice that my lights (headlights, dashboard, interior lights) pulse or flicker. Happens more when I give the car gas. They go bright and then dim. Everything seems to be working fine otherwise. Can this be a bad rebuilt alternator? I bought it from a local auto parts warehouse. All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like loose wires or a bad ground.

Did you install a new regulator or reuse the old one?

If by local parts house you mean a place like autozone....then its likely a very low quality unit.....only the german rebuilds last a long time.

I will never order another alternator/starter/pump/anything like that from an autozone type place ever again. They sell junk.

Sounds like a flaky voltage regulator at the least....

Wouldn't be the first Cheap-o Depot alternator to be DOA.

I've experienced this in the past and never tracked down the root cause. I had a Peugeot that did what you describe. It went for years and many miles that way. I'd suspect the voltage regulator, but I'm not sure.
