Opportunity to Snag Low Mileage 1992 300D
About a year ago, I'm visiting my father at his retirement community. And I see this beautiful champagne 1992 300D sitting in the lot. I go over to take a look...immaculate condition....98,000 miles! Of course, I already have one and need another like I need a hole in the head. I'm told the woman who owns it doesn't drive it very much, probably SHOULDN'T be driving at all, and will probably be parting with it at some point. But I said to my dad, who knows the woman, "Hey, ask her some time if she ever wants to sell....that you have a son who might be interested."
So apparently, every few months, he's casually mentioned the matter to this woman. And, lo and behold, just this week her children told her that they no longer want her driving. Soooooooooooo............ Apparently she's pretty well off and, to unload it, would probably just sell it to the dealer (if they'd even take it). So there's the possibility that I could get a pretty good deal if she'd be happy just to deal with the matter quickly and know that it's found a good home. I'm assuming she's taken it to the dealer regularly and I should have access to repair records. Any advice as to how to play this, how to drive a hard bargain? I bought my current one in 2003 with 137,000 miles on it for $5900, and I thought THAT was a good deal at the time. I'm hoping I might be able to do better.
