83 300DT Loud whistle noise

I just bought my first MB and I love it. Everything seems to be fine with it except I hear a medium pitched (on then off) whistle type sound that makes the same noise at any speed or when I am stopped. It is frequent but not so much that I can take it to the mech. and let them listen. It sounds like it is coming from the rear of the car. Any ideas?

Thanks
Wayne

welcome to the world of the vacuum leak.do you r climate controls all work?door locks all work?I would look first at the "egg crate" in your trunk. Its under the rear deck, will have a line coming into it thru a rubber grommet. Is the hose in the hole?Is the grommet ther and/or intact?

I just went through the "Exact" same problem with my car when I picked it up. Does it sound like it is on the drivers side under the hood or somewhere ellse?

Mine would whistle at any steady speed under about 70MPH then disappear when I accelerated or lifted. VERY annoying!

It turned out to be leaky and bad EGR and ARV controls. I just removed them with the associated vacuum lines and the whistle stopped. At that point things in the car started to work much better. Like the door locks and A/C controls.

You can try to isolate it using the vacuum diagrams here on the site.

I had a door lock check valve under my dash that would squeal. I would try unplugging just the door lock system(yellow line in the engine bay) and see if it goes away. Then unplug just the climate control system(green line in the engine bay). If it goes away with one or the other you know it's in that system. Then you can persue it a little deeper.
