Brake pad sensor(s).

Plain and simple. Did ALL 123s come with them? Mine has a spot on the cluster for it, but there is no bulb behind the legend. Was it my PO's way of 'fixing' a problem, or did some not come equipped with them.

Thanks!

My 78 240d 4spd has them. Have you checked behind the wheels? If it came equipped with them, there should be a plastic bracket on the back of the caliper that the sensors plug into. It would be kind of weird to remove that bulb though, since if you don't have the sensors plugged in, nothing happens. Maybe the PO took the bulb out to change it and never got around to it?

For what it's worth, my automatic '78 240D (August birth-month, I believe) has one.

The FSM mentions the sensors in the section on removing the front calipers, without qualifying model year variations.

The presence of a clear icon to be illuminated suggests there should be a light to illuminate it.

My '79 has them too. If it did not come with a car there would not be a picture for the warning light, it would be blank.

How do these sensors work anyway? I'm very curious to find out.

Answer

The rotor cuts into the sacrificial sensor grounding the circuit = lighting the bulb.
This is why they are replaced with each brake pad service.

Have a great day.

It is easy to check. Insert the correct light bulb in the dash. The ground the brake sensor but touching to chassis. The brake warning light should come on.

I meant "Then ground the brake sensor by touching to chassis". Too early in the morning in CA.
