300D Sunroof question-What lube and where?

The wife's 81 300 D roof started to drag at the last couple of inches on closing. I've checked the DIY and search, but didn't find a lot there. I know I've seen threads on this, (maybe mine!), but don't remember. The 70's, you know. Anyway, I just cleaned the rails and was getting ready to put a little 3in1 oil on the joints of the deflector arms and the rails, but thought I would consult all of you experts first. The roof has worked great for the 2+ years we've had it, but this is the first time I've seriously cleaned it and lubed it. I found one thread where someone spoke of high dollar, way-too-much-quantity MB rail paste, but don't really feel the need for a 3 lifetime supply of the stuff. What are the safe alternatives, and where are the correct spots to lube (and not to lube). Thanks! Lee

I think I've seen posts here that say Fastlane sells smaller containers of the sunroof paste. Also, if the sunroof hasn't been regularly lubricated in the past, it might have worn out felt covered rubber slides.

You can buy a one owner quantity here

THe good folks at MercedesShop sell smaller quantities of the sunroof paste here. It is cheaper and less hassle than replacing broken sunroof parts due to dirt laden or gummed up grease.

There's a few good sunroof pictorials in the DIY section that show removing and reinstalling the assembly. The slide rails are the things that need to be cleaned and lubricated for the sunroof to slide. You 20+ year old teleflex cables could also use a good cleaning and some of that paste lube.

thanks all! I found the DIY on the sunroof, but it didn't have anything on greasing it. I went out and put a thin line of 3 in 1 oil on the clean track that was visible, and on the control arms (?) of the wind deflector, and it seems to help a lot. I'm not quite ready to take it apart just yet, but eventually this spring I will. I spent an hour cleaning the black stuff off the door jambs that the weather seals left over the years. I had to use lighter fluid and a soft washcloth to get that stuff off. Never would have thought that material would stick so well to that silver paint. I can't believe I didn't think it looked ok before I cleaned it. Now to get out there and wax the jambs. As a matter of fact, while I was kneeling down beside the drivers seat, I couldn't believe all the trash underneath it. Next step- remove those front seats and clean who knows how many years of trash, cigarrette lighters and I'm afraid to even think about what else! Hope there's some money!
