Front Bearings, w210

So, I'm commuting in & out of town all week. When I get home, my wife mentions that the car is making a funny noise. I take it for a spin, don't notice anything in particular. Then I stop to get the mail, and as I pull a u-turn it makes a funny "clunk" and then a horrible metal on metal sound. I limp home, about 2 blocks.

Question about front bearings: Is 1/2" play considered excessive?

Anyway, as per the attached image, the front bearing has completely disintegrated. Lucky it happened so close to home.

Will the standard bearing kit be enough?

Well the cap was off and loose in the wheel, so that greasy stain is new... I swear!

I will have a closer look on wednesday, but I'll be really shocked if the spindle is pooched. It literally only drove 2 blocks like that, at ~10mph.

Behind that split retaining nut, is there a flat washer that sits against the outer bearing? Anyone have a parts diagram?

Thanks!

This is all the EPC has....not much. http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp?TP=1&F=210025&M=606%2E962&GA=722%2E608&CT=F&cat=45P&SID=33&SGR=030&SGN=01

i don't rememeber any washer when I repacked and tightened mine up, but it was a while ago. Free play "ought" to be set with a dial indicator gauge who's spec I don't know; I'm sure I did mine wrong applying old school tech (tightening until rotor would not spin freely and then whacking the end of the spindle wiht a hammer) but they appear to have lasted longer than yours..... I have virtually no slop when jerking the tire now FWIW.
