Transmission Grind 1992 300SD
I'm under my 350SD dropping the transmission, when my wife pulls up in her 300SD. She says, "Listen to this". When she shifts from P to R or D it sounds like the starter trying to start while it is running. I slid underneath (the car) and when she tried it again, it came from the Torque converter.
I did a search on here and found a couple identical threads but no resolution. I even sent them a personal message to see if they had resolved their problem, but no response. So I'm asking for help. Any ideas what the cause might be? I am in the middle of trying to get mine running and am ready to tow hers to a shop.

Could be a bad flex plate.....or a failing torque converter.
Or perhaps the front pump in the trans itself.

I know about checking the pump pressure. How would you check the others without just replacing them one by one until the problem is resolved?

Those would all be by visual inspection- a grinding noise is going to show wear on something. You will probably have to pull the tranny to address any of those- and I agree it is probably going to be one of them if the noise is coming from the engine/tranny joint area.
You might try opening the torque converter bolt access plate and see if you see or feel anything through that peephole.
