What does this bolt do?

While I had the radiator out I started cleaning the accumulated crud off the front of the engine and found this under 1/4 inch of black gunk.
It is in the upper block just below the valve cover right of center.
Is it a drain plug?

I think its an access port to an oil gallery, common source of seeping oil that contributes to the accumulation of sludge you cleaned off. Keep an eye on it and DON'T remove it with the engine running.

I dont think the location of this plug is anywhere near the timing chain. I also believe it is access to the oil gallery.

Behind the plug is the idler sprocket pivot pin...hollow,but not pressure-lubricated.
Is there any special reason MB always put MoCr on the heads,I wonder...
