Broken W126 GenII sun roof.
I hope you guys can help me out. I have a big issue with the SDL's sunroof.
When I got the car, the tilt feature would not work, but the roof would slide back and forth. One day last summer the cable came loose from the sun roof. Lucky for me the roof was closed. I can hear the cable rattling in the roof. The problem I am having is that I cannot slide the sun roof back to remove the headliner panels and take a look at the problem. How do you manually unlock the roof so that it can be pushed down and slid back? I really want my sunroof back in operation for the Spring weather... Thanks!

You need to search the forum. There are a couple of threads talking about how to open up the sunroof once it has broken. I read some of them because the sunroof of my '87 300D was broken. Based on my reading, I would not try to open the sunroof unless it is for a repair. If you once get it open, you may not be able to get it closed and weather-tight, which IMHO is more important.

Thanks!
Most of the threads deal with the Gen I sliding roof. I did see a thread where they said to reach between the two pieces of headliner to move some locking rod, but I could not find anything in there to manipulate. I would only open the roof to fix the problem as I know it would probably not close properly without the motor locking it in place. Has anybody forced open their GenII sunroof? I can't imagine I am the only one with this issue...

Nope. Mine is broken, too, but since it's stuck closed, I'm not messing with it until everything else is fixed. Fixing the manual one on Max was pretty hard. I'm guessing a motorized one will be even harder.

i completely rebuilt the slider in my 87 300d. i dont know if its the same as yours but what i think you need to do is somehow pull it back in the same way the cable pulls it. i know that sounds goofy but if you can find some way to latch on to the metal part of the roof and pull back it may move. there arent really any locks per se. the cable does everything as far as moving things around.
but i could be wrong. |

How did you reach the mechanism? Through the opening between the two headliner panels?
Thanks!
