Lost turbo in 300SD Recommendations for replacement?

Lost turbo in 81 SD, any reccomendations for replacement? As the title said I lost the turbo in my 300SD. It is the stock Air Research (garrett). I was driving and it all the sudden started howling like heck so I pulled over and I knew it had to be the bearings between the intake and exhaust housings. Well I was right the intake shaft has approx. .100 of play (it wiggles all over). Any suggestions to what would work well and fit in with moderate amount of modifications. The mods aren't and issue, I own a fab/machine shop so I have the skill to modify. Since this happened I'm thinking about getting a Variable Vein (geometry) turbocharger. I found this one on seattle craigs list.
http://seattle.craigslist.org/oly/pts/1064567753.html

Since I have to upgrade, I am also pullinf the injectors and replacing the nozzles with 265's. 310,000 miles on bosch nozzles and the result is very annoying combustion knock. I have also dialed in the ALDA and the motor and transmission are running very good and strong.

Any help on this dastardly issue would be very appreciated!

If you want it, I have a spare stock turbo I picked up a while back for $100 and could drop off next time I head down to Portland.

I suggest you get the stock replacement .. there are several threads in the archives.... and it sounds like an easy drop in fix...
If you get to messing with what was originally designed to go together just do one thing at a time... otherwise ' tweaking ' to get it right becomes a nightmare .

I was able to get a kit on ebay for around $110 to rebuild the turbo in my powerstroke ford truck.... I'm not sure if such a kit is available for your turbo or not - but if the impeller and hard parts still look good - it could probably be rebuilt pretty easily with new bearings.

A known good used one for $100 sure seems hard to beat!

The very first thing to do is find out WHY the turbo died. They don't just run merrily along for 28 years then suddenly decide to commit suicide, there has to be a cause behind a sudden failure. Low oil pressure/flow, incorrect/dirty oil, overspeed, broken wastegate hose, high exhaust temperatures, restricted intake, debris damage from poor filtration, driver abuse (frequent sudden hot shutdowns), etc.

A long the line of the last post by FI. Taking the Turbo apart will tell you if it is rebuildable and give some idea what might have happend to it.
I would not buy any sort of repair kit until I knew what needed to be fixed. Example: if the bearing bores in the Turbo Bearing Housing (in the center of the Turbo) are worn a kit with stock sized bearings will not help.
They have oversized Bearings; but, the Turbo Bearing Housing needs to be bored or honed to the next oversize to make us of them.

I have had the car a few months and I have cared for it very well, I change the oil every 2.5K with Delo 15w-40. I used a mahle oil filter. The turbo has over the past 500 miles been making more noise but nothing out too aggressive. I was driving along and it jsut started howling. I;m going to pull it down and see what I can do.

Thanks

Okay I want to upgrade my turbo, but I dont want to fool with electronics. Is there any Variable Geometry Turbos that have a mechanical boost adjustment?

There are VGTs (FI, BGkast, Baja, and myself have them-though they can be time consuming to adapt and tune)

I'd be willing to sell you my working Garret that came off when the VGT went on if you want a bolt-on solution.

I'm thinking about doing a much-needed injector cleaning/re-set (for pop presure), and am hearing some people recommend nozzle replacement as well.

Does anyone have the injector nozzle cleaning tools I've seen around from time to time?

Ian, what are '265s'? Thanks, all!

Those Injector Cleaning tools are something that I believe Mercedes Source came up with to sell.

We had no such cleaning tools in the shop I worked in with the exception that we did have Ultrasonice Cleaning Machine. However, we did not use it on Mercedes type Injectors.

Some members have small Ultrasonice Cleaning Machines that they also use to clean their Injectors; sold by Harbor Freight. I have the smallest one they make but you do not need one; especially if you are putting on new Spray Nossles.

There are some Threads/Posts on cleaning Injectors and making a Pop-Tester to test them depending on how much DIY you want to invset in.
Here is a site that was recently posted on rebuilding Injectors:
http://vincewaldon.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=20&Itemid=28

There are also 2 different members who if you buy the new Nozzles will rebuild them for a very resonable labor charge.

The 265s are a newer design for the OM60X engine. They reduce emissions over the stock 261s.

The 240 nozzles are not made any more, they have been superseded by the 261 nozzles.
