Medium pitced hum in rear differential

I just recently purchased a 1984 turbo diesel 300D. It is the first Mercedes that I have ever owned and it is pretty awesome. After driving it around quite a bit this weekend I noticed that there is a medium pitched hum coming from the rear of the car. I took a look at the rear differential and noticed that there was a drip of oil hanging from the point at which the drive shaft connects to the rear differential. I thought maybe it was a bad seal or a worn bearing of some kind. Could anyone give me some tips on what this problem might be.

I am also looking for a online catalog of all of Mercedes parts. A friend of mine told me that there was a web site somewhere that had a list of all of the parts for my car. He said it was called the Mercedes Star catalog. If anyone could point me in the direction of this online catalog, It would be much appreciated. thanks!

clean the diff, drain oil, find the leaking seal or gasket and fill it with new oil

I totally agree. However, if you can't get to the repair soon, then at least consider topping off the lube in the diff until you can -- it's quick and, with the right tools, fairly easy. Mine also leaks around the pinion seal, and I just topped it off last weekend as part of a diagnostic for a problem I'm chasing.

Click the "Buy Parts" button at the top of this page.

Our gracious sponsor will have most any part you might need for your car: searchable by system category. Most part links even have a photo of the individual part. Exploded diagrams are online elsewhere. Someone with that knowledge will hopefully point you in the right direction.

you need a 14mm allen socket to check the level- autozone carries a set of 4 big sockets for like $10. if the output seals leak, they are not too hard to do, but you need to pull the axles. input seal requires a special socket. and the back cover is easy enough to remove and reseal.

I think almost all 123's have a hum from the rear diff. just keep it full, mine hasnt gotten worse (louder) in 50+K miles running mobil 1 gear oil (fleet farm is cheepest, by like $7 a qt) you need just over 1 Qt to do a change.

this thread reminds me it is time for a change in my car- I know what I'll be doing today......

FYI-StarTek info EPC doesn't work on Macs.

If you dont want to buy the socket, bring over some gear oil and we can change it here (I am in 55406)
