Air Pocket at top of fuel tank? 250 Mile on 6 gallons
What is the deal on these fuel tanks in a 1982 300SD. Yesterday I went on a 250 mile rouind trip and refilled when I got home.
No way am I getting this sort of mileage.

I've found that at many fuel stations the ground is not level by the pump, at a station I fill at, if I fill at one side of the pump I can fit like 3-4 less gallons in than if I fill on the other side due to the slant of the pavement towards (or away) from the fuel filler. It can make a big difference. For example, last time I filled at that pump on the slanted-towards-the-filler side, I achieved the amazing mpg of 28.5.....today I filled on the side slanted away....and got about 20.8mpg. You could argue that mpg estimates are only accurate on multiple high mile (350+) fill ups in the same spot....due to things like ground slope.
Also, side note: If you fill a diesel really fast, the fuel will majorly foam up and trip the nozzle, allowing far less fuel into the tank. I usually fill slowly so it doesn't foam up.

The tank also has an air volume above the filler neck inlet for expansion.

It doesn't have much of that left if you fill on a good slant, shake the car to burp it and fit more fuel, and fill till its level with the cap opening.

Exactly what I do. It can take me ten minutes to fill up

One should use the same filling station, same pump to fill up the tank before and after the trip. May be mark the position of the car if one believes the levelness of the car can make a big difference.

A good running 617 powered W126 will never see much above 30-32 even in extreme circumstances. I achieved 29.8 before by going 55mph with very few stops (and sloooow acceleration and coasting to stops) over a span of 250-300 miles or so. I have also touched 29 in the city by driving so extremely slow and gentle that I thought I was going to go crazy. I saw 1400rpm as a good maximum limit.....and never ever went above it for about 2 weeks of driving (all city).

I never tried. I have my own filling station.

I do the same thing, people look at you funny while you're holding the fuel nozzle in one hand while jumping on the bumper (yeah the shocks are bad)

Funnie. Yes the station was a different station each time. The one station for the first fill up is slanted with the filler pipe up 3 or 4 inches. This explains why I got a bunch in the tank this first time. Then second fill place it was flat and thus an air pocket. If I add the 2 gallons to the 6 I get what I should expect as far as MPG goes. Thanks

Your fuel tank may have collapsed........... Lots of hissing when you opened it?
