oil filter o-ring, where do they go?

Hi, I'm working on a 603. Read here on the forum that some erratic oil pressure can sometimes be cured be replacing the oil filter o-rings(2). So I ordered some and I'm now in the middle of changing the oil, but can't figure out where they go. Not the big on at the top of the housing. These in the picture below.
Thanks
Samson

about 2 inches from the bottom of the tube. There should be 2 o rings.

When you remove the oil filter housing cover, there is a long tube attached to it that goes down the inside of the filter. At the bottom of the tube there are two small o-rings. Those are the two you are asking about. One is slightly larger than the other, but I understand that some folks have successfully used the same o-ring size in both locations. IMO, they do not need to be changed at every filter replacement, only when they start to get very hard or shrunken.

That's what I thought, but they both appear to be metal on my filter tube, or they are so dried out they no longer are rubber like. I tried getting them out with a screwdriver and felt like I scratched it, rubber is not supposed scratch.

Yep. Get a tiny screwdriver or pick behind them, they'll just break apart instead of stretching out of the grooves.

I've used wire cutters. Pinch the O-ring with the cutters and it'll shatter. Across the tube is fine, no need to dig it out first that way.

Thanks, I used a pair of needle nose pliers, they broke out like they were plastic. Replaced them and now I don't get weird oil light syndrome.
Thanks

Both o-rings are 6x10x2. MB part #015 997 94 48.

I purchased two o-rings at the dealer once, they were different sizes. I do not believe that MB would specify the same size o-ring for two different size grooves. I do believe that the same size may "work." Tomorrow at work I will look at the EPC system and see if there are two part numbers.

When I first encountered this problem, I also thought the black ring on the shaft was metal and was afraid to mess with it. Turns out it was the O ring that was petrified. Mine also broke apart like a piece of brittle plastic. After I put the new O ring on my oil pressure needle stopped jumping around.

I've been using the same size "O" rings for years, no issues that I'm aware of.

I also looked it up on EPC... it is one part number for both positions. I'm surprised, but that's it.

I have 2 of the same sized O-rings on my Oil Filter Stem and when I orded replacements they were also the same size. All the parts places I looked at had only one size and said you needed 2 each.

These are the sizes from my notes that one of the Members uses:
"First thing is to put the correct "O" rings on the filter head stem, (no, they are not the same, the lower one as installed is 6mm x 10mm, and the upper is 7mm x 11mm. Don't believe it, take a dial caliper and measure the stem)."
Sorry, I don't remember the Members name.

It might be interesting if someone who has an old origional parts book to chime in and see if in the past both O-rings were also the same.

For those Folks that wish to try the 2 sizes of O-rings as above (or if you are in a bind and just need the stock size).
I bought this at the local Autozone at $8. An assortment of Metrick O-rings.
For the Oil Filter Stem you get 24 of the 6mmx10mm size (the stock size, enough for 12 Oil Filter Changes if you replace them each time you change).
You also get 24 of the 7mmX11mm ones if you want to try the different sizes. (If you use 1 stock size O-ring and 1 7mm O-ring you have enough to change them 24 times.)
There is also a lesser number of the size that will fit the lower Secondary Fuel Filter Housing Bolt. (The largest size in the kit 14mmx19mm fits the larger end of the Filter Bolt but I am not sure it is fat enough to do the job.)
