Talking At $600 I figure I'm entitle to entry into the Cheap Wagon Club.

Here's my first W124! I figure the price was too good to pass up.

Not quite roadworthy as purchased, but also not a total parts car.

So far as I can tell the only purchase items I will have to get are a CV join and a boot kit for the front axle and some exhaust hangers. The driver's seatbelt retractor is shot, but I should be able to pick up a replacement from a pick and pull yard.

The muffle pipe is broken at the rear muffle, but it is in good enough condition that I can patch and reweld it, so that's a freeby.

It needs a thorough scrubbing and polishing - lots of elbow grease. All the paint is original and there is no rust except at the fuel filler door. There are no tears in the leather or doors. The interior B pillar trim is loose, but only requires some glue to fix.

If it passes emissions and inspection I should be able to get it on the road in short order.

I'll worry about the 4Matic later; after all, it is just the beginning of summer so I have time to worry about that.

Yup, running driving diesel for under a grand.

Nice find anyway... Looks to be in good cosmetic condition. That's something most of us lack in the CWC.

According to the CWC Charter it only reflects you have to have acquired said vehicle for less than a grand. It is silent on the engine type.

I wrote the thing, so I guess an exception can be made IF you can get that car road capable for under 1k. We haven't allowed non-drivers yet.

... tyler, didn't you write it on the DIESEL forum? I think that's SUCH a nice wagon that it could indeed be worthy of the club.

I wrote it in the club area, but the idea came after purchasing Norm and other people purchasing Diesel wagons at the same time.

Sure he can join, if he can get that gorgeous looking soon to be serious brain damaging car road worthy.

As a double member of the cheap wagon club, the 3 main aspects of the charter are:
#1 A grand or less
#2 A wagon [duh]
#3 Driveable [still for under a grand]

I'm afraid gassers qualify, they just don't sound as cool.....

With 4-matic it won't stay under a grand for long.....

I will track and detail all expenses to roadworthiness here in this thread; although the "driveable" requirement is not expressed it is implied - otherwise you could technically join with a 1 wheel engineless parts car.

All those expenses to get to legally driveable wagon will be included. I do not, however, believe that full repair of 4Matic to be a requirement. It was an option just like A/C, power passenger seats, and a sun roof. If having every option being fully functional was a requirement many others might well be excluded. Disabling the 4Matic and using it in 2 wheel drive is still legal and roadworthy.

I will also not include legal expenses, such as registration, titling fees, and taxes. Those vary by state and do not allow for a level playing field.

Thus far I have spent $9.00 on power washing the under carriage and engine (as seen in the pictures).

As to this being a gasser, the CWC social club is located in the uncatagorized social club area -that is where you join, not in the diesel discussion section. While the majority of cheap wagons are diesel that does not make it the rule. I chose to present my submission in this thread because this is where I knew I could find the majority of its members regularly hiding out.

Total so far: $609.00.

When you mash the pedal of the 280TE I bought (and sold to my best friend), your first thought is "Holy crap, a fast w123! Why didn't I find one of these sooner!"

Gassers should qualify.

Don't try to argue the finer points of the Cheap Wagon Club with Paul. He's a lawyer . . .

Nice-looking car, Paul. Congratulations. You've got quite a few projects going over at your house now, don't you?

Not a bad looking ride! I wish you luck on road-worthying it with your remaining $391.

Strange? Tight spaces used to be my living. It's inspired.
