W126 slipping Odometer

I tried a search, but the only failures of W126 odometers I could find involved broken gears. I have suspected my odometer is reading slow, and recently confirmed it; on a 180 mile trip the odometer only read 110 miles. I have fixed slipping W123 odometers using loc-tite before, will a similar repair work on the W126 odometer?

Same issue for my SDL but the opposite.
I just found on a longer trip that I travel about 9/10 mile for every mile shown on odometer. With all new gears too.
The error doesn't show until about 25 miles and does accumulate.
Maybe the encoder?
Maybe just the intrinsic error of an older mechanical odo.

My 1983 300SD had a slipping then stopped odo.
The same Loc-Tite type fix worked.

And when I opened it I found the 12 tooth gear was missing two teeth.
I scavenged a replacement from an old Radio Control toy car.

I found the internals to be basically the same as the earlier W123 odo.

The non gluing method involves etching up the surface of the pin; Jimmy swears by an engraving tool, IIRC, but I just used a sharp knife. Don't pull the pin unless you have something to slide in on the other side. Otherwise, its nearly impossible to get everything lined up perfectly again.

The '87 has the same issue. I'm interested in your outcome.

My daily driven w126, "Coda" --- odometer broke. I removed the cluster and extracted the odometer. Guess what? It's NOT like a w123 odometer. It like has 2 parts and the main part is soldered to the board of the 2nd part. I didn't want to have to unsolder it to get to the mechanical parts. Yes, I had one obviously broken gear...broke right in half; and another gear missing about 1/4 .

I sent it off to www.speedometer.com ; Rick was friendly and quick with his service.

I think it cost about $125 and the odometer came back with about 120+ miles on it in about 7 days.

Coda's speedometer worked fine; Rick only worked on the odometer. Replaced 3 gears, lubed it, and bench tested.

Yep, that's reasonable........considering that half that cost is in parts (three gears). I'm going to give it a try as well.
