'87 190d 2.5 turbo questions...
Yesterday I took a 190d turbo for a test drive. It has about 200,000 miles on it. I have never driven a turbo Mercedes before so I would like to know how this thing should perform. I found it to be very sluggish and I didn't hear or feel the turbo "kick in" as I have on other non-Mercedes turbo's I have driven. I was driving along an open stretch around 55-60 MPH, I floored the accelerator and nothing happened. The car didn't down shift or speed up or anything. Obviously, if I decide to look into this car further I should have it checked out by a mechanic but I am wondering what your first impressions would be? Walk/run away and look for something else or investigate more. The rest of the car is in good shape, no rust and they are asking around $4,000. I have owned BMW and Audi in the past but I am a noob when it comes to these... Thank you!

I have owned one, it should kick. On wet pavement it will easily spin in a straight line, on dry pavement slick surfaces like white lines at intersections can also make it spin on takeoff. 0-60 is a respectable 10ish seconds in good tune.
Several cheap things can be wrong to make it so sluggish, all have been covered here many times. Sluggish off the line / below 2000rpm: Search ALDA (lean takeoff, often free to fix). Sluggish above 2200rpm (no apparent boost) also search ALDA, also "Switchover Valve" (lean when boosting, often free to fix). Early shifts and thus lethargic to accelerate search "Bowden Cable" and "downshift button" (causes car to shift before boost in all gears at full-throttle, often free to fix). Very fun car to own and drive. I'd have kept mine if I were a couple of inches shorter.

Very common for the boost signal line to the injection pump to get clogged. Very easy to clear the line to see if that restores power. As a seller, I wouldn't take kindly to a prospective buyer pulling things off the engine.
If it's in average condition, I'd say the price is $1000-2000 high. For the asking price I expect documented maintenance history back to day 1 indicating it needs nothing. At 200K miles proper maintenance records would indicate considerable suspension work. Of course it wouldn't be sluggish if it had proper maintenance history back to day 1. Make sure AC works if it's important to you. It's unlikely it "only needs a charge." 0-60 mph should take no more than 12 seconds. Don't even bother with a PPI if the seller isn't flexible on price. No need to run based on what you've described. Sixto 87 300D |

Thanks for your replies. Based on what you guys have said the turbo isn't working properly. I was thinking about offering around $2000 anyway so we will see what happens.

Buy it and I'll sell you a nice crack-free dash for it.
Can't help you with the center-console piece that's butchered though.
