I found a 300D turbo with a manual....
This is mike (the original guy who posted the "300D with a manual" question a few days ago) and have found something I think everyone who participated in that discussion would find interesting. I wonder how much it really cost this guy to convert his 240D over.
the website is: http://www.dhc.net/~pmhack/mercedes/240d-300sd1.HTM Let me know what you guys think. mike |

Looks nice, especially with the euro lights. He says the 5-speed tranny is from a 1975 car. So is the transmission a MB transmission or from another car? Also the 300D Turbo came with a 5-speed manual in Europe right?

I don't think any turbodiesels were available in Europe. I could be wrong.

Thanks for the find! I would like to get in touch with the guy as he left some details out in the discussion, but mainly to congratulate him.
The 300D came with a 5-speed in Europe, but the 300D Turbo was not available in the sedan (the wagon and as a chassis for ambulances and delivery/utility vehicles only which all had automatics - no manuals at all). It is possible the transmission is from a 230E or 280E with a manual. They were available in the early 80's with 5-speeds. Well, sounds like someone did it and it came out well. I would love to drive it and see how the car responds. Jim

Come to think of it, years ago when I came across the DHC site, I remember seeing this car... I knew it was rigged beyond all recall, not really a clear cut conversion was listed... Interesting stuff, however, I question the reliability. You know if he has to explain how careful he has to shift, its not worth the time, money, effort or the car to convert it. Sounds like a rig-up to me.... Make it respond to my hand like an M3, then we'll talk (or atleast to the point I don't have to be carefull at every gear change).

It sounds to me like all the ill behavior of the transmission is due to the make shift(no pun intended) 190E shifter. If the right shifter were used with the transmission, it might be a dream to drive.
I don't think any of the ill behavior is because it is a turbo engine with a manual transmission. If I could get the right pieces gathered up, I'd like to build a car like this myself. Have a great day, |
