I have a 1991 350SD. The turbo is leaking about 1 QT of oil in 3000 miles. The engine is tight. There is about 100K miles on the turbo.

I am going to rebuild the turbo, but I need to find the part number so I can get the right rebuild kit. Where is the part number and what is the easiest way to get to it?

How did you isolate the leak to the turbo?

If it's a Garrett turbo, there should be a tag along the mating surface of the compressor housing and center section.

The maker of the Turbo has a small plate attached to the Turbo on the center section (The Bearing Housing) or the Aluminum plate behind the Compressor Housing that has the model number of the Turbo.

FWIW the 603.970 has a unique turbo. It is different then the 603.961 and 603.971.

I can see oil accumulating in the crossover and a tiny bit oozing out of the seal between the intake manifold and the crossover.

After cleaning up the area I look for leaks.

Oil leaks out of the intake side of the compressor into the rubber air intake.

There was a lager leak from the turbo oil feed line (it was twisted and cracked) that is now fixed. No oil is still leaking from the turbo oil outlet.

I believe this has been going on for about 15,000 miles and I am just getting tired of it because there are no other leaks and want to take care of it before it gets worse.

What is the easiest way to get to see the turbo part number? Can I use a mirror? Do I have to remove a bunch of parts?

While most of the Turbos are made by Garrett (Air Research) some of them are made by KKK (I do not know were the tag is on the KKK).

I have not seen the tag on mine that is on the Engine and have not been able to find the spare used Turbo I bought in my crowded messy Garage either.
On my Car; a Federal 84 300D I would have to remove the Air Cleaner Housing in order to get at the part of the Turbo under it and between the manifold and the turbo. Yes, I believe you will need a Mirror and a strong flashlight unless by luck it is located in an easy to see area. Also the tag is small.
Part of the problem is that the plate can be installed in 4 different positions and they do not worry about which position it goes in. This means the tag could be in any of 4 positions.

I also had a '91 350SD with a suspect turbo seal. The engine was using about one quart of oil per 1000 mi. To verify that it was the turbo seal, I disconnected the crossover pipe at the intake manifold, rotated the pipe slightly and ran the engine (1500-2000rpm) with the turbo output directed into a corrugated box. Quite a bit of oil droplets were in the airstream and consequently deposited in the box. You'll also find significant "devils food cake" accumulated in the crossover pipe, intake manifold and intake ports.

Thanks. I have all the symptoms, but less oil consumption. I don't add any oil between changes, but it can only get worse. Thanks for the part number. The G-Pop Shop says there were two different turbos on the 350SD.

BTW: Who sells the best turbo rebuild kits?

I have read that there is 4 different types of seals used on the Garrett Turbos and as said before some Mercedes Models use KKK turbos.
Also few members have rebuilt their own Turbos so I am guessing there is not enough numbers of people who have done the job to say who sells the best kit.

This is what notes I have on turbo sites and where to buy stuff. If it was me I would be sure to get a kit made in the USA.
Also I believe the Rons Turbo site you can send your Turbine, Compressor Wheel and Thrust assy to him and he cleans and balances them for a resonable fee.
