That car is located 10 minutes from me. I saw it outside and needs a LOT of TLC. Need some body parts like moldings, hood emblem, and NEEDS PAINT JOB BADLY I am not picky but I cannot drive car in that shape. I wonder if 200K miles is original and who knows how it drives.

Awesome, a 60x vs. 61x battle ... it's been way too long. I have had a 603 since I was five, and it hasn't killed me in my sleep yet. I just bought a 616, and though "pedestrian," it is glorious as well. At 253,000 miles, my 87 300D looks and drives pretty darn well and really hasn't cost me much to keep up. Will it last as long as my 364,000-mile 78 240D? I don't know, but if it doesn't, I'd hardly call it "junk."
As for the original question, I recall seeing production numbers that actually said four 1986 300Ds were imported to the US market, but I may be wrong. That'd be an unlikely find. More likely, as others have said already, it's a gray market car or a 1987 300D. My 1987 300D has a build date of Dec. 8, 1986, but it is a MY87.

MY87 cars started production in mid-'86, this is when the line changes over to the new model year. I have looked at two "86" 300Ds that were MY87, and one "'96" E320 that was MY95, it's the title that matters (and the emission sticker).

Build dates vs. model year
Quote:
The '87 was built July '86 The '96 was built "10/95" Wonder who has the latest build date for any particular model year, mine all appear to be "early?" Jeremy

Well for my taste is bad the way I look at it outside tells me usually how the car was taken cared overall. I know it is 1986 but I have seen many many better shaped ones even W123 that were like 5 more years older.
