1986 300D?

I have a question, might be a dumb question but here it goes. I saw a 1986 300D in craigslist, my question is what kind of diesel motor is in a 1986 300D? Not a 617, or a 603, or a 602. What is it, I dont see too many 86 300Ds. Is there a reason for this?

Junk.........Ok now that that is out in the open, 86 was
the first year for the 6 cyl diesel with a ...how shall I say,

NON cast iron head,
Is it happened to over heat, it cracked the head. later
this was addressed, but not until like 87 or 88.
I just steer clear of anything newer than 85.

It was the first year for the om60x series engines so it will have some quirks, the '87 model year seems to be doing just fine. Its not like its a ticking time bomb, as long as it was taken care of there should not be that much of a worry.

Jack, you need some W126 GEN II/ W124 in your life... I can't believe I drove a W123. How, pedestrian!

It's probably a euro model, and being a 300D it would have the 603, probably a non turbo version.

more than likely.

I'd hold out for something with a turbo.

Most likely a typo. Best way to tell is by pics.
IIRC most went to South Africa or Eastern Europe. An '86 w123 over here would be incredibly rare, even more rare than a 5 speed wagon.

Just looked at the ad again, it is a turbo.

I've driven an NA one (a 1986 model actually!), they aren't terrible. It gets out of its own way well enough.

Bull****.

The 60x aluminum head engines might not tolerate abuse/neglect like a 616, but maintained even close to properly they often last 400k miles plus. Mine have all been great.

I guess that you have to change coolant every three years, sure beats setting valve clearance.

here here!!

Nothing like an om603 in proper tune. Sitting in traffic at idle the tick of the clock can be easily heard and a conversation can be undisturbed while under full load.

Boy, it sure didn't take much to convert you. Now if you ever set foot in a 124 with the OM603, the SDL will be a distant memory. (can opened)

There is nothing wrong with 603 engines, except the 3.5L. The 300D is either a euro or actually an 87, the W124 300D was only sold in the usa in 87.

As others have already said, the W124/OM603 Turbo was sold in the USA as a 1987 model only. It was sold in Europe as a 1986; it's also possible that a few came over here as Euro-delivery cars. Many (including mine) were made in 1986, as shown on the VIN plate. The seller could have seen that and been mistaken. So there are a number of ways that a 1986 model could be over here. It will have a few small differences but will be fundamentally the same as the 1987 model.

I don't think that any of the few 1986 W123/OM617 models were officially imported into the US of A. Such a thing would have to have been brought in by an owner moving from Europe or Asia to the US. Possible but unlikely.

Most likely the car was an early production model made in late 86, marketed as a MY87.

I highly doubt the 5 W123 300TDs made in 86 still exist.
