'97 e300d...opinions

I'm looking at a clean, mechanically sound '97E 300D with about 115K miles. Will appreciate any thoughts/opinions on this model and what's a fair price range. Do they have any recognized nagging problems? Do these have turbo's or merely down shift when you tramp on them? I'm use to the SDL's and need to decide whether to try and pick up a '91 model or go the route of the 300E diesel?

Will appreciate your input.

Bill

97 would have the non turbo 606.912 engine. Would prob drive similar to a SDL for accel. 98-99 606.962's were turbo'd with 174hp.

World of diff with the E300 vs older models. Quiet, handle better, more luxurious, AC actually works, safer, etc. 97 has ABS, ETS; airbags front, side and curtain all for the front seats. 97 was the first year with the 722.6 electronic 5spd trans.

Value somewhere around $6-8K in nice condition.

Are there any Members in his area that have a Pop-Tester and would test them for free?

Anywhere from $4K - $6K tops for price. I would opt for and shop for a '98, or '99 E300 These are performance cars for a little money more.

Have definitely decided to buy the '98/'99 e300td. Would certainly appreciate any words of wisdom, pro and con on the car...especially any typical mechanical problems. Figuring one with about 150,000 miles, in good shape, is going to run 8 to 10K? In the past I've had various 300 series diesels from 1980-1987. Will appreciate any thoughts.

thanks
Bill

I'd say $8ish in very nice condition with books and records, they get older every day. Be patient.

All W210 chassis have the same basic problems: spring perches, AC blower regulators, K40 relays, occassional key issues, etc.

The 606.962 turbo doesnt really ahve any new problems compared to the .912's. Both have GP issues (twist off), leaky fuel line and shut off valves orings, etc.

Except for the GP's and spring perches it is pretty easily managed for most.

The lower the mileage, the better. Look for one with around 100K or so miles. They're out there.
