Block Heater

Is it safe to leave a block heater pluged in over night?
Thanks.

Yes. I plug my car in during cool weather overnight eventhough it rarely gets cold down here in TX. I know its overkill, but it really helps the engine in the morning.

yes, a timer

I leave for work at about 7:00 am and i have a timer hooked up so the block heater goes on at about 3:00 am. The valve cover is warm to the touch when I leave.

These block heaters really work well. I once took temp of the block in the morning after the block heater had been on all night.. overnight temps were in the 10-15 deg. F range, and at 7:00 am the temp of the block at the front of the engine just below the head was about 68 degrees!!! Toasty! (I measured temp with a magnetic surface thermometer used for hvac ducts)

Either:
1. Park in a heated garage.
or
2. Use your block heater.
or
3. Reduce the life of your engine due to cold starts.

I'd recommend either 1 or 2

I plug my Volvo in 24/7. If its not plugged in, its running. I love not having to wait for the heater to warm up!

DZLPWR offers wisdom. Listen to him.

Have a great day,
