Occasional no start

I have noticed over the past few days that when i go to start the car nothing happens.

Here is my normal procedure for starting the car. IE: unlock the car, get in the car, put key in ignition, turn key to glow, wait until glow light goes out, count 10 seconds or until glow relay kicks off, turn key to start position and start the car. When the car is warm I just wait for the glow light to go out and go.

The no start condition happens both hot and cold now. Today I noticed that if I rack the gear selector back and forth a few times the car will start every time after the no start condition.

Is there a switch down on the gear selector somewhere? Any other ideas?

Yes. NSS. Neutral Safety Switch. I believe there is a thread here with instructions on how to replace it.

Ok... Thanks. I think thats it. I noticed over the past few weeks that occasionally the reverse lights were not coming on. Probably a related issue then?

I went to search and saw a few things. But nothing on replacing it. Maybe just pull it and clean it up?

Do I access it from inside the car or underneath?

Underneath, it's attached to the driver's side of the trans.

This problem can also be caused by the shifter bushings. Seen it before.
Put the shift lever in N and move it back and forth. Does it have a lot of play before you can feel it actually doing anything?
Shifter bushings are a lot cheaper.

Thanks for replying guys.

Can the bushings be replaced from inside the car? How do you get to them?

The shifter feels pretty tight. If there is an easy way to peek at them, I would like to know.
