Modern Diesel Fuels:

Interesting...

I can remember when diesel fuel would leave an oily residue as it evaporated. Now, the modern fuels eavporate totally away, leaving nothing behind.

Years ago, in 1988, I worked briefly for a Belgium company called Atlas Copco Airpower. They had a factory Rep from Deutz come out and he recommended we put 1 gallon of ATF to every 50 gallons of diesel for improved cetane rating and lubricity of the injektion system. We strated doing this on all of that equipment and I do recall they seemed to run quieter with the ATF added.

I have used MMO in the past with good results and noticed a decrease in combustion noise. The sound reduction is similar to what you get with B100.

Has anyone else noticed this??

I think some are advising against this nowadays, because modern ATF has so many additives and chemical changes compared the old stuff, that it is not very good for you IP/ engine.

This is just what I have heard, though. I'm sure others will chime in with a better explanation.

The altered fuels burn at a different rate (typically "slower")
This leads to quieter operating.

ATF is NOT a fuel. It doesn't belong in the tank, especially if its used ATF. Its an old mechanics myth that does more harm (injector coking) than good.

Clean diesel is all that should be used. If you want to put an additive in to make yourself feel better about the sulfur myth, use an additive specifically made for diesel. If you want the engine to sound quieter, retard the injection timing.

That makes sense...I wonder about the use of MMO as an additive???

MMO is little more than mineral spirits (Stoddard Solvent).

Like all the other "feel good" fuel/oil additives, its effects are 99% psychological and 1% solvent.

I realize that, but it sure makes the combustion process quieter, similar to what I get with straight VVO...Just curious if anyone here has tested it...Robert

Just because it gets quieter does not mean its better. As I said before, retarding the injection timing will give you the same result.

I've tried MMO but I never felt it made my engine quieter. To make the engine quieter (and maintain complete combustion) you need to raise the cetane of the fuel, and I don't think MMO has any cetane boosters.

I agree that ATF has no place in the fuel system.

Just curious...not trying to argue the point one way or the other...

I have much more seat-of-the-pants acceleration with MMO in regular, California Diesel #2 or VVO....

There's your problem, cat pee or cr@p. Almost anything would be an improvement over those.

It's quite possible the MMO, like most heavy oils, has a higher BTU than the other fuels..SVO/WVO has less than #2, and I've heard the California #2 has less than the rest of the county's #2 Not sure if that is true or not, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Stuff like #6 is really potent, but that's all for big ships to run on and stuff

Actually I like CA diesel. Last fall after I filled up my E300 near Sacramento the engine was still sounding great. Then later when I refilled with the local winter-ready cat pee, all the knocks and pings that I hadn't heard in a long time were suddenly back. I think my car just doesn't like winter diesel.

I posted a link to a pdf that did controlled testing about a year ago. MMO was shown to INCREASE wear in the engine. It increased wear in the IP and scored the cylinders due to oil washing. The best thing is BioDiesel. Even in small amounts like B2, it significantly reduces wear in controlled testing. Diesel Kleen, Lucas Fuel Treatment, etc are OK, but are not as good as a little Bio. SVO and WVO are not recommended due to the extra wear they put on the injection pump and injectors as well as scoring the cylinder if I remember correctly... I will look for the post with the link...

Found the link:
http://www.johnfjensen.com/Diesel_fuel_additive_test.pdf

1) 2% REG SoyPower bio-diesel
HFRR 221, 415 micron improvement.
50:1 ratio of baseline fuel to 100% biodiesel
66.56 oz. of 100% biodiesel per 26 gallons of diesel fuel
Price: market value

17) Marvel Mystery Oil
Gas, Oil and Diesel fuel additive (NOT ULSD compliant, may damage
2007 and newer systems)
HFRR 678, 42 microns worse than baseline fuel.
320:1 ratio
10.4 oz/tank
$3.22/tank
