Stupid newbie headlamp question

Looking to replace a front headlamp bulb on a '91 350SD (a Halogen 9004), and I can't figure out -- doh! -- how to remove the assembly to get at the bulb. Any assistance or links to online instructions is appreciated.

Not hard, open your hood. There should be a cover on the back of the light that you need to remove, take that cover off. You should be able to get it from there.

Yup. Remove the cover, and then rotate the locking ring to remove the lamp.

Don't spend any extra money on fancy bulbs. The beam pattern of 9004 lamps is inherently bad due to the lamp design. Save your pennies and get a set of ecodes.

Not true.....I just upgraded my car from H4 retrofit sealed beam units....to the later W126 9004 lamps....with Silverstar Ultra lamps in them....and the light pattern is excellent IMHO. Way better than the old lamps. Either that or I am just amazed because I went from candle power to torch power!

I have normal SilverStars in my W124, and it has excellent light on the road as well.

The ease of changing bulbs on the newer assemblies is SO nice compared to the sealed beam setup....those are a PAIN!

I went from Silverstars in DOT headlights in the 87 SDL to basic 55w Osrams in E-codes and there was a less white light where light should be vs very white light where it wasn't useful. We have Silverstars in the Caravan where they're a good compromise because E-codes are cost prohibitive. Silverstars are better than regular halogen but they have 25-30% the service life.

Don't get me wrong, I think Silverstars are better than folks like Messers Stern and Berg give them credit for. And I respectfully disagree with pawoSD that DOT lamps with a bulb upgrade are any improvement over E-codes. Once you get used to the cutoff beam, driving with DOT lamps is like driving in fog with high beams on.

Ya, 9004 and 9007 lamps are physically incapable of having a good high beam pattern. With good bulbs the OEM ecode lights provide excellent lighting.
