83 Euro 240D purchase opinions

Hey Guys,

So I went and looked at an 83 Eurospec 240D 4 speed manual over the weekend. I'd like your guys opinions.

The engine has 110k on it and runs nicely. On inspection of the motor I did see that the injectors looked like they were wet from fresh fuel and he couldnt provide me any explanation for that. Transmission shifts good, but it feels like when its in third if I get on the gas and let off and keep my hand on the shifter it feels like it wants to pop out of third.

When going down the highway it wants to pull to the right up until about 60 mph. There is a slight shake in the front from 30-60 or so then it goes away. He claims its a ball joint and has a new one to put in but hasnt yet.

The interior is a mix of a couple colors (but thats not a problem because I have the entire interior to my 240D that rotted out that is in mint shape). It is dirty inside but nothing a good cleaning wouldnt fix. I never can understand why anyone who wants to sell a car would not at least make it presentable.....

The guy said it had no rust underneath, but I found a hole through the floorboard on the passenger side (right where the seat bolts down on the right) and its getting that way on the drivers side as well. There are a few rust spots on the fenders but they are mostly surface rust. No holes that I could see. The paint is somewhat faded and I'm not sure how much a wax job would make it shine.

So anyway, he claims he's got tons of parts like all the components to give it AC, which ill never do because i dont care for AC, hubcaps, interior pieces, manuals, etc. What do you guys think? Is it worth $2000? I'm following ebay and good looking cars (and Im talking about the 240s, not 300s) dont seem to be bringing what people are asking. This search for a manual 240 in decent shape is starting to drive me crazy! Seems like all anyone has up here are rust buckets and they want top dollar for them! I think this biodiesel/veggie oil fad is whats doing it!

Not with rust holes. But most everything you're going to find at your location of that vintage is going to have rust holes. Buy one in the SouthWest and drive it home.

With corrosion damage as described I'd say it's about a $500 car. For $2000, you can fly to Atlanta, buy a rust free 240D in decent shape, drive it home, and probably still have money left over.

I'd say rust holes in the floor automatically drops it below $1200 if it were my decision. The condition otherwise and questionable transmission drops it below $1000. The only thing really propping up the price on this car is the fact that it is euro, but in an objective sense, what is that really worth to you? The relatively low miles of the engine make it a good donor for a body in better shape, but how much would you pay for a parts car?

I have bought two 123s and a 126, all for under $2000, and none had as bad of rust as you are describing (two were purchased in WI, which has the same winter salting conditions as NY).

The wet injectors could just be leaky return lines which are about a 15 minute, $5 fix, you could check to see if the lines are wet to verify this (they are the cloth covered lines looping from injector to injector).

Thanks guys.

I told the guy I couldn't give him more than $1200 for it and he acted very offended. He even told me to think about it!!! Isn't that what the buyer is supposed to say? lol

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't the one going crazy here.

Looks like I'll have to broaden my search!

5-800 tops.

Grill the owners, if it looks good have them take it to a dealer for inspection, if it's still good, train, airplane or greyhound, drive it back.

If you want rust free, then I invite you to visit Memphis, Tennessee to see what cars look like here.

Rust in the floor pan is no big deal. Rust under the seat mount = new floor board. $1200 sounds more reasonable.

Thanks for the crazedlist link. I was wondering how people were searching other areas easily. It works great!

Stay out of the southwest!

I'm gonna be looking for a 240D as soon as I sell my truck . . . so . . . don't buy mine!

One thing to look at down here in the SW is paint faded & dash cracks . . . but they are down here . . . so . . . come on down . . . in a few months!

Craigeslist site

There is a Website that combines all of the craigslist, and e-bay listings throughout the country. It is updated daily. I find it by going to Google and typing in the word "Jaxed site mash" Good luck, Dave

Interior is not much of an issue for me. I have the complete interior to my 240D that has absolutely no cracks, rips, or tears in anything and the carpets are spotless so I would just use that if need be.

I cant wait months!! The race is on!!!
