fan noise

I have a 1998 E300 diesel with 230K miles. When the engine is first started there is small squeeling sound every 1 second. As the engine warms (ie a couple of minutes), the sound gets louder. I believe it is the fan clutch. I have replaced the water pump and the central idler pulley within the last year so it is probably not those components.

When I turn the fan, it turns smoothly but stops turning as soon as I stop turning it. I am looking for the best way to touble shoot this. Any ideas?

Thanks

Fire up a cold motor, raise hood, observe fan, turn engine off. Fan should turn a couple of times. When locked up (+95C) it should howl and not continue turning doing the same test.

WHen cold, the fan should turn a couple of times when I turn the motor off. Does this indicate the clutch is good or bad?

From what you are saying, when the engine is hot, the clutch will howl if it is bad.

Proper operation:

Freewheeling when cold. Its not locked up and the fan contributes in a minor way to airflow; you can reach in with bare fingertips and let the blade go thappp, thappp, thappp against them and bring it to a stop.

Begins to lock up at 95C. Fan speed increases with RPM 1:1. Sounds like a 747 taking off and you wouldn't dream of trying to stop it.

The problem was not the fan clutch. The problem was the pulley on the alternator. I changed to alternator and the fan clutch. All is good.
