Oil Gauge flutter on 2.5 Turbo Diesel
The oil gauge on my 1990 2.5 Turbo 300D has started to flutter a lot more than usual at around 700-900 rpm. Over 1000 RPM, it goes all the way to 3 and stays there.
When I bought the car at 111K miles, it jumped up to 3 as soon as you turned the key, even when the motor was not running, it pointed to the 3, which is a sign that the sending unit was bad, so I replaced it. Then it would point to somewhere between 1.5 and 2 when idling and stick to the 3 when running over 1000rpm. Now it flutters. It flutters so much you can hear a clicking sound as it hits the post at the 3 setting on the top of the gauge. I am pretty sure that this is not acceptable by factory specs. Is this the sending unit, the wiring, a fuse, or something more serious, involving actual oil pressure and therefore a matter to be worried about? And exactly where is the OP gauge, anyway? Many thanks for any help on this.

Replace the O-rings on the Oil Filter Cap Tube. (The 2 small ones down on the end of the tube. Do a search and you should find the sizes. The manual states it can be as low as .5 at idle as long as it comes up you are ok.
