1974 Mercedes 240D - No Start
The vehicle turns over fine.
Customer complaint: It was running fine, and the next day when she went to start it, it wouldn't. Are there any common problems associated with these models? Can anyone tell me where the best spot to check fuel pressure is? What else should I check? Thanks, Lance |

Glow plugs. If original it has series glow plugs. If one fails, none work.

So I just pull the glow plugs out and turn the key and see if they glow?

If it has the original plugs, it will have heavy squiggly wires between them. If they are working, these wires will get VERY hot as they operate. Most times you can see them glow red, particularly if it is dark. If these wires are not getting hot, the glow plugs are not working.
If they're not, you'll have to figure out why not. Could be one bad plug or more. Not that familiar with the 74 system, but I'm guessing it has a heavy strip fuse in the glow circuit that could have failed. That is pretty common. You can check for voltage at the first plug (near the firewall). If you have voltage there, it's probably a bad glowplug or two.

A '74 will have a gorilla knob on the left of the dash and the salt shaker glow indicator right above the steering column, between the instruments. Gorilla knob starting is different, pull knob out partway and hold until you see a glow in the salt shaker; pull the remainder of the way to start.
Like Kerry said, these are series glow plugs ie: one element of the circuit fails and nothing works. Use standard troubleshooting to flash out the circuit, starting with the simplest thing first: the 'squiggly' buss connections between the glow plugs. In my book, wiring connections would be next in line to examine, then the fuse, then gorilla knob switch...
