Unhappy Need Help Identifying Part - And How To Repair

The part - the blade type piece that keeps the door from opening too far.
Mine works VERY hard. Seems to be wreaking the frame mount.
I went to a pick and pull today, was going to get a replacement part. Took the door panel off and couldn't reach inside far enough to touch. Seems that unit may be mounted with 2 big rivets. I didn't have a drill, so couldn't try to remove.
And I did spray lots of WD-40 on mine.
Anybody ever try and replace one of these?

remove it....replace it...

You can use the search function and find the story about one of the forum members who had to saw the thing off on a very cold night using a dremel tool in order to get the door shut.

The way to remove it is:
Undo the 13mm head (I think?) bolt(s) in the door that are in line with the blade; the door check is about 6 inches long.
Then drive the pin in the door UP with a small hammer.
The door check can be removed.
Don't even bother trying to rebuild it; and lubrication doesn't seem to help for long.

Good Luck

The service manual says use a drop of motor oil periodically to lubricate door checks. When you change you oil lube the doors.

Go back to the boneyard and pull a couple for spares. Follow the above directions except I think they were 10mm bolts and a flat washer type keeper that has to be removed with a pair of pliers on the dowel pin.

You will see, easy repair.

It's really hard to get lubricant into the correct place on the door check straps. I'd just replace it because it can jam tight in the open position. I've dissassmbled one but putting it back together bordered on the impossible.

For lubricating door hinges, mechanisms and locks etc I swear by motorcycle chain lube, I use castrol brand.

It comes in a spray can with a straw like WD40 and sprays on very similar, then the solvent evaporates and leaves a nice lubricating wax in all the right places.

The difficulty is in getting the lubricant to the two spring loaded balls which slide in the rails. There are holes in the rails which in theory would allow lubricant to get around the balls but those holes are at the end of the check strap buried in the door, impossible to access without removing the strap. I don't think you could lubricant into those holes even if the inner door panel is removed.

Smile

All fixed up!!! Went to another pick & pull today. Got lucky. Found a 126 model. It was black, like mine. Got the door check, the plastic door sill, and the gasket(?) that goes around cabin opening. Everything in black.
Thanks all for your help.
