found out today only 3 bolts are holding my transmission on... question
Today while trying to track down an oil leak I noticed I was missing a few bell housing bolts... 5 of them are gone. The PO had the transmission rebuilt a couple years ago so I am assuming who ever did the work either just forgot them or they were not tightened properly and they fell out. The only bolts still there are the starter bolts and one on the other side of the bell housing kind of under the oil filter housing. I can easily get to the 3 lower bolts that are missing so that wont be a problem to replace. I am wondering about the top two bolts though. I can just barely get a finger in the hole to feel that the bolts are missing but I dont think there is any way I can actually get a wrench and hand back there to tighten replacements. Are there any tricks to doing this short of completely removing the engine/trans? I suppose I could cut a hole in the firewall behind the bolts but I assume that would require removing most of the dash (not in the mood for that). Any ideas?
this is a 300d W123, BTW |

There have been lots of threads about this. You need some long entensions and a good tight swivel to accomplish this without too much frustration.

you may be able to reach the top two from under the hood. make sure the bolt holes line up... I had a 300CD with a replacement engine from a W116 in it... only 5 holes lined up.

You can get better access to the top two bolts by unbolting the rear trans mount and lowering the rear of the trans. Be careful to remove the accelerator rod that runs to the IP from the firewall mount. You may also need to disconnect the trans selector rod as well.
