High pitched screeeeeee sound from passenger glove box
Hi folks,
I own a 87 300DT Sedan. Over the past week or so when I start up the car, there is a high pitched screeching noise coming from around the passenger side glove box. After a minute or two, it stops. I am assuming for now it is vacuum related. More ominously after work, I started up my car and got on the freeway. It did not shift into 4th, so I pulled over and adjusted the trans cable nut (aka bowden cable nut) to shift earlier. It worked...gotta love these mechanically adjustable features! But I am thinking that it might be related to this noise and whatever the underlying cause is. I'm going to check the trans fluid now, but has anyone experienced the same sound? And if yes, what was the reason and what was the fix? Thanks, Bob |

Not sure what year it first began but some MB's have a small motor to suck in air to the climate control system. That motor is behind the glove box I think and sometimes makes a noise.

That's probably what it is. You can access it by pulling the glove box. I lubed mine with a drop of ATF per GSXR's recommendation. That has worked so far. Mine was worse when it was cold.

It is called the aspirator fan and it runs continously to suck a sample of air via a tube across a temp sensor located by the roof mirror.
I installed a new one; not expensive as I recall, from an on line jobber. My Independant mechanic told me it would get worse and worse until it drove my crazy. Lubing it might do just fine.

Gents,
Many thank you's to you all. I'll have to make some time to pull the glove box and lube the part. I'll do my part and post pics along the way. Thanks, Bob |

Blower cleaning and link to DIY
If lubing the blower doesn't make your noise go away, it's fairly easy to take the blower apart for a complete cleaning. I found mine to be rather dirty. It seemed to do a better job of pulling air after cleaning out the dust and lubricating the bushings.
Early versions of the W124 attached the little fan to the under-dash panel on the passenger side. The panel acts as a drumhead and amplifies the sound that the little blower makes. Later W124s attached the blower to the heavy-gauge tubing cross-brace that runs across the cabin behind the dash. In this position, the blower can no longer be heard. A DIY with pictures is posted on this forum here. The bracket could be fabricated with a piece of strap or search the junkyards for a later-than-1987 model. Jeremy
