How to replace your Neutral saftey switch w/pics

When you start your car do you always have to put it in N, do your reverse lights not work anymore? If so it’s either causes by bad wiring, bad shifter bushings, or a bad neutral safety switch.

In my case my back-up lights stopped working and all wires appeared to be good. So I bought a new neutral safety switch.

Here what you’ll need:
Neutral safety switch part # 000 545 46 06
8mm socket or a wrench, either will work
2 10mm wrenches
Flat head screw drivers
Pair of pliers

1. Raise the car and locate the switch on the driver’s side of the transmission:

2. Use a small screw driver and easily pry off the electrical plug. Be very careful its is very brittle:

3. Use both 10mm wrenches and remove the bolt and nut that holds the linkage to the tranny. You must remove this bolt or the linkage will not come off the tranny. Once the bolt is out slide the linkage off the tranny:

4.Use your 8mm socket and remove the 2 mounting bolts and slide the switch off the shifter shaft:

Here is pic of the new switch installed:

Enjoy your working reverse lights:

When installing the new switch you might have to use a pair of pliers and turn the black part to the correct spot for the shift lever prongs engage in the slot. You’ll see what I mean when you do it.

Most of us have the later style neutral safety switch though, it is mounted differently than yours. It looks like this:

That is a BEAUTIFUL 280CE though! WOW. I wish I lived in Florida so my car looked/stayed so clean.

I can start in park but my reverse lights do not work.
Would a bad NSS be the problem?

fruitcakesa,

I've had that problem before, turned out to be a loose fuse.. my fusebox is pretty funky so sometimes I just have to get in there and turn a couple fuses to get things working one day I'll clean that out.. food for thought

79Mercy,
Nice writeup! I never knew where the NSS was. Hopefully I'll never need to know Either way it's nice to know these things, gotta love the forum.

BTW the 280 is looks great!

Very nice write up Mercy, and it is always nice to see your car. That is one I'd love to see in person some day and ride in it.
Now, how on earth do you get your ramps to stay put on concrete when you drive your car up on them? Mine slide..........

Thats exactly what my problem was. started in park but the reverse light didn't work. Replace the NSS and it will solve your problem.

Thanks. Come to the summer GTG. My ramps never slide, never had a problem with them.

Is there a way to electrically test the NSS to be sure of it is bad?

Yes there is, there are four pins in that socket. Two of them shorts in P and N (the safety part of the switch), the other two shorts in R (the backup-light). I don't remember which ones goes to what, but if you have a wiring diagram the switch is covered there and the pins are numbered too.

Nice write up and very sharp car!
For the bold and brave there's an older thread detailing how to repair a faulty NSS switch, I followed that guide once and it worked like a charm.
It should be noted that the repairing involves drilling out the rivets so they must be replaced by something else after repair, I used very small diameter bolts and nuts.
