78 240D Violent Shake

I bought a 240d manual that was non running for a hundred bucks. I got it running and got it on the road. At lower speeds it has a vibration in the front end that I can hear and feel in the steering wheel. At highway speed 55+MPH it has a violent shake in the right from wheel/tire. It almost feels like the tire is bouncing up and down and moving side to side as it goes down the road. When I slow down it goes away. It sounds liek the tire is ready to come off but when I inspected the lug nuts they are all tightened to spec. Could it be the shock? I have heard it could be a loose wheel bearing. What do you guys suggest?

have the front wheels balanced at a tire shop, that would give you a good starting point.
100 bucks, so was this a driver, or was it sitting for quite a while? I have see tires develope a flat spot when sitting for a while. when they warm up, things smooth out.

You did say it was a none runner

It was abandoned on this guys property and the last time that it was registered was in 2005. the tires have plenty of tread on them and wernt flat when I bought it. It was in a field. The lady said that she thought the engine was bad and needed to be replaced. She just wanted it gone so i got it for 100 bucks put some new filters on it, adjusted the valves, and with a little bit of cranking she fired up and is fine. It runs good except for the violent shake. Now that I think about it, I never thought that the wheel could be that far out of balance that it would shake like that, but i will rotate the tire to see if the shake moves to another part of the car.

-I would take out the wheel bearings, clean and repack them and then set play according to spec. If your bearings are shot or you have too much play you could definitely get some unpleasant symptoms at 55 mph.

-Something else worth checking: Your flex discs. Even though you said it was the wheel, the driveshaft is to your right so it's possible a vibration you think is coming from the right wheel is coming from your more immediate right. Ask me how I know ...

-It could be a stuck caliper or warped rotor, although you likely would notice that very much on braking.

Were the tired sunk into the dirt when got her? Is is possible part of the rim is embedded with mud/gunk?

More than likely this is a tire/balance problem.

Repacking the bearings would not be a bad idea anyway if it was sitting anywhere it was exposed to moisture. Should be fine, but you don't want to take a chance on something so simple to do.

Tire balance/out of round is the most likely culprit.

Is there any unusual wear on the Tires?

I am thinking that the shaking might be the reason it was abandon; thinking there some worn or damaged parts that the PO did not want to pay for or deal with.

If there is any shops in your area that do free front end inspections you could let them check it out for free and simply not have the work done there.

When I had a Car that shook voilently above a certain speed i turned out the be a bad Tie Rod Ball Joint (the plastic in the Joint had cracked and a piece come out). I have had a similar problem with the tread seperating on a Tire or a blistered area on the tire.
Any chance that the PO hit something and bent some parts.
I hit (went over) a 3 inch high Island and bent 2 rims on the same side and cracked my Rear Trailing Arm (it cracked across the rust holes that were in it). So if you hit something hard enough parts can be damaged.
