What am I missing...Climate Control lights

Alright i've got the center console taken apart based on Brian Carltons comments on the subject from a few years ago.

I'd like to know about the fiber optic cable myself. I'm in process of changing the shifter bushings and would like to get that light working again.

Ok now he says that the bulbs are inserted into the unit from the back but from what I can see on my 91 (and a very similar CCU from an 87 300D) There are no slots for any bulbs anywhere. Did he mean that these are fiber optic light connections for the CCU and that the bulbs are located somewhere else behind the center console? If so where?

Brian's advice is based on the pushbutton unit (PBU) for the older W123 series. It has four sockets for light bulbs that are in a string like Xmas tree bulbs. In your car (and my '87) the bulbs are built into the PBU. You have to take it apart to change the bulbs.

Ohhhhhhhh I sure hope not because that would 100% completely suck

(On the bright side I did find one burnt out bulb back there.)

I think it's the same deal with 124 CCU units. They're buried in there.

I think w124's are little different.....be right back with a pic. I found a w123 model and a w126 model --- the w123 model has the wires and lamps that plug into the rear.

On the w126 models I have, there are 2 tiny bulbs that just squeeze into the front.

Yeah my control unit is different. They must have changed it on the later models.

Its much closer to the W124 CCU. The ones pictured plug in from the side, the two that I have plug in from the top. (From 87 300D and the one currently in the car) I also didn't see any bulbs coming out of the back of mine.

(The unit on the bottom right of the last pic looks like the closest match)

The 2nd gen W126 and W124 have the same climate control system.

Well, there. Jason had the answer. Look at the FRONT face of the w124 ACC unit. I bet there are 2 small bulbs in it --- might be behind 2 round circles of foil tape. Here is a closeup that does NOT have foil tape over the holes.

Yeah I saw that...the next step is what tweezers and the patience of a saint? Not looking forward to removing my wood trim panel (I'm trying to remember now how it was attached)

No, the next step is this - http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=253035

[edit] Oops, this is for a 124 - The wood is easy to remove. There are two screws pointing upwards jsut above the radio. Remove the two screws and swing the wood panel upwards like an airliner overhead stowage bin lid.

Haha wow thats really clever, I have more then enough of that line too.

I pulled the entire center console apart earlier, I just didn't remove the wood trim from a CCU (I'm surprised at how easy it actually was to be honest)

Try pushing a piece of tubing over the bulb, see if you can find one that is a snug fit so you can use it to unscrew the bulb (or however it goes in).

Perfect, now I have an excuse to replace the bulbs in the S124

Question is, does it matter if it's a frosted or clear bulb?

I just replaced those on my W124 with a set of twezzers and it works perfect. I never had to open the unit. I took them out with a set of small tweezers you just pull straight out then you put them straight in easy 3 seconds job
