Putting a 617 into a 1979 280sel euro
I may have an opprotunity to buy a 1979 280sel euro. It's a 116 chassis with the m110 motor. It has euro bumpers, euro lights, velour seats, manual windows and no ac. It's a beautiful car. However, I don't want to deal with the gasser problems and would consider putting a 617 motor into it most likely from a 1979 300sd. I'm assuming the motor swap would be fairly straight forward. One thing that occured to me is that this euro car has a longer wheel base than the 300sd. Would this create drive shaft problems? Are there any other red flags that you guys can think of that might come up with this particular engine swap?

The M110 engine is actually a very reliable and long lasting engine if properly maintained and does not get many of the "routine" gasser problems. It's hp is rated much higher than the US version and is a blast to drive. I'd think twice before butchering such a fine machine.

The M110 and OM617 are almost the same length. As long as the transmission is about the same length, the drive shaft shouldn't be an issue. You would have to wire in glowplug controls, do something about the tachometer, remove the g@s fuel pump and filter and worry about if you can register it in your state.

If you have decided to butcher the car, I would be interested in the M110 motor Thanks |
