Engine destroyed?

300d Cracked oil pan. Oil leaked out and I did not notice. Drove on the freeway, engine felt weak and making clickety clack noises. Stopped immediately but probably too late. Did a temp fix on oil pan, refilled the oil but engine still weak, oil pressure gage falling, noises.

I hit and scraped the ground and did not check. It was dark and I never saw the puddle that formed later.
It sucks because it only had 150k miles and the interior is in great condition.
What are my options now. Is there a good place to get an engine. Typical cost?
1980 300d; non turbo; automatic; los angeles

UPDATE
I got a quote in a shop for $800 labor and $1200 for engine. If I could keep the total cost to around a 1000 it might be worth it, but where to find the engine.

Sounds very terminal to me. The freeway part really hurt your chances.
So, what caused the cracked oil pan??

BTW, you might want to enlighten us on what type of car this might be.....

I'd say its toasty dead. I'd imagine an impact great enough to crack the oil pan would be a bit noticeable.....I'd have stopped ASAP.

When I cracked mine, I heard it scrape but there was no IMMEDIATE evidence of damage so I made the assumption that it was just the bumper scrape that I had heard. Mine happened to leak so slowly that 15 minutes later when I parked, it hadn't gotten low enough to cause damage yet.

I'd probably stop from that too.....but I am real paranoid. At the very least I'd have been watching my oil gauge for the next 30 mins....and probably get in an accident because of it.

I cracked the oil pan on my 240 on the way to work once. I didn't notice anything until someone came in and told me my car had a black puddle under it. I went out and checked the oil and it hadn't lost much. I pulled it into the shop, drained it, dropped the lower pan and had our fabricator weld it up.

When I hit the pan I was on a dirt road and probably doing 60 or so.

I also knocked the oil pan loose on my first car in 1994. I'm pretty sure it happened when I hit some railroad tracks too hard. This one didn't go as well and my first indication of trouble was the rods starting to knock. The motor was totaled and I ended up junking the car. It's a shame because it was a '73 Chrysler with a big block.

To know this, we need:

Year, make, model, trans type of your vehicle.

YOUR location.

can't give any concrete help without that info
